Thoughts on Real Valladolid vs Barcelona

Real Valladolid will not be the hardest test Barcelona faces this season. However, a win for the Blaugrana is crucial to keep up the chase for the La Liga title as Real Madrid sit one point ahead of Barcelona with a game in hand. While relegation is no longer a threat to Real Valladolid, they will want to improve their home record, winning 4, drawing ten and losing 3. Barcelona start the game on 76 points with three games to go while real Madrid has 77 points with four games to play. The title race will seemingly come down to the wire, but win away at Real Valladolid will certainly push Barcelona closer to the summit.

Despite having several injuries, Barcelona are coming into the game with high hopes with a nine-game winning streak. They have lost a number of key players due to injuries; however, the Real Valladolid defence will have to prepare for the Messiah that is Lionel Messi, who once again is proving the doubters wrong at age 33, scoring goals and getting assists at will.

Time to step it up for Valladolid

Real Valladolid hasn’t enjoyed the most excellent campaign this season, sitting in 14th place and hovering around the relation zone all season it seems as though they could well be safe. They must overcome a tough Barcelona side to solidify their position in the top flight next season. The team has scored 0.83 goals per game this season, which is anything but desirable. Despite this, they have managed to keep a clean sheet in 41% of all home games, which will be encouraging for the Valladolid faithful.

Averaging 1.29 points per game at home, Real Valladolid are given a +20% home advantage, further boosting confidence for the fans whenever any team travels to the Jose Zorilla Stadium. Real Valladolid has the fourth-best win percentage in the league with 23%, merely Abysmal for any top-flight club. However, the club has been known to score a goal late on in the game, showing resistance as 34% as the team’s goals have come in the final 10 minutes.

Mercurial Messi to the Rescue

Barcelona has been a dominant force in the league since the late 2000s, partly in thanks to Lionel Messi. Barcelona has scored 9000 goals in its history, and he has had a hand in 996 goals, showing that this little man is easily one of the greatest ever to touch a football. Barcelona has been in fine form the past five games, earning an average of 2.17 points. Conceding 1.03 goals per game is outweighed by the side, being able to score 1.65 goals away from home.

Despite the impeccable firepower Barcelona has, the Catalan giants have only able to keep a clean sheet 29% away from home this season. A joint center-back partnership of Gerard Pique and Clement Lenglet has proved vital for Barcelona’s defensive form. Still, it has been forced into the rotation following injuries and suspensions throughout the season.

Despite being suspended for the match against Real Valladolid, Ansu Fati has been on phenomenal form this season when played. Is he the heir to Lionel Messi’s throne? This 17-year-old sensation could be the second coming of the Messiah.

Top Contributors

Real Valladolid top contributors:

  • Enes Unal (Forward) A shining light for a very lackluster Real Valladolid side, Unal has scored six goals and contributed a further two assists. At 23 years old, the former Man City man still can improve and will continue to be a reliable attacking outlet for Valladolid in the future to come.
  • Sergi Guardiola (Forward) Blessed with one of the most notorious surnames in football, Sergi Guardiola is not related to Pep but did play previously for Barcelona. Scoring six and assisting two goals, combining with Enes Unal, the attacking options for Real Valladolid at the top of the pitch are in safer hands.

Barcelona top contributors:

  • Lionel Messi (Forward) I don’t need to introduce this icon, but for my pleasure, it’s worth noting that Lionel Messi is the top scorer and assist provider in the league with 22 goals and 19 assists. At the age of 33, the man is a real phenom and a diamond in the game of football.
  • Luis Suarez (Forward) One of the best strikers in the world for the past ten years, Suarez hasn’t been as productive as he once was. Although he has scored 15 goals with nine assists with limited game time this year shows the Uruguayan still has some magic left in the tank.

Thoughts on Sheffield Utd vs Chelsea?

Chelsea will see this game as a must-win match to maintain their hunt for Champions League football next season. The Blues travel to Sheffield to square off against a Sheffield Utd side that had a poor start following the Premier League’s return. However, they’re beginning to find the rhythm that put them in European contention earlier in the season. The visitors Chelsea start the game in 3rd on 60 points. Despite being in 3rd, a win for Sheffield could reignite their Champions League aspirations as they’re on 51 points in 7th place.

Since Sheffield United’s valiant rise back to the Premier League, both sides have met only once in the Premier League, resulting in a 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea will come into the game with high hopes of a victory, given the performances since the restart have been top notch. However, a stern challenge awaits them as Sheffield Utd often operate with a back 5. This game has a feeling of attack vs. defence written all over it; both sides are fighting for European football, so you do not want to miss watching this one.

Can the Blades put Chelsea to the sword?

Following their impressive 3-1 victory against Spurs, Sheffield United have looked like the team that began the season so brightly, following up with a hard fought draw at Burnley and a win against an exciting Wolves side. Sheffield Utd averaged 1.50 points per game across home and away games; despite this, they have been more prolific at home, earning 1.76 points per game. This gives Sheffield United a +18% advantage when playing at home.

At home this season, Sheffield Utd have scored an average of 1.24 goals per game, in comparison with 0.82 goals conceded per game at home. On-loan goalkeeping sensation Dean Henderson has had a great season, which contributes to under a goal a game being conceded at home. The side has often been known to score an opener against an opponent and then often sit back to protect their lead. They can back this up with 67.6% of their games ending with two goals or under, and you wonder if the plan is working for them as they sit currently in the Europa League places.

In Lampard, we trust

Chelsea have looked unbeatable at times since the Premier League returned, the team have averaged 2.50 points per game since the restart and are showing no signs of slowing down. Overall this season, the visitors have earned 1.76 points per game away from home, scoring 1.59 goals per game away, and conceding 0.94 goals per away game. Willian, Giroud, and Pulisic have been firing on all cylinders, thriving under the roles that ‘Super Frank’ has them playing under.

In 70.6% of Chelsea’s games, two or more goals have been scored. Showing you cannot go wrong for entertainment value when watching Chelsea play football. Following deals to sign both Hakim Ziyech from Ajax, and Timo Werner from RB Leipzig, two world-class attacking talents adding to the Chelsea ranks will make them a dominant attacking side in the future. You may have only just seen the beginning of what could be an era dominated by the blue side of London.

  • John Fleck (Midfielder) – 5 Premier League goals and 2 Premier League assists (Last scored against Arsenal in January). Tremendous on the ball player and integral part of the Sheffield United midfield.

Chelsea Top Contributors:

Thoughts on AC Milan vs Juventus

The 35-time Scudetto winners Juventus travel to the city of Milan to take on AC Milan. Unbeaten since the restart, Juventus have played three, scored nine and conceded one goal. AC Milan’s home record this season has left much to be desired. Playing 14 games, winning five, drawing five and losing four games, a very average record for such a historic football club. Juventus, on the other hand, have an excellent away record, playing 15 games, winning 10, drawing two and losing three.

The previous meeting between these sides in the Serie A resulted in a 1-0 home win for Juve, Paulo Dybala scoring the goal. It seemingly will be a game of attack vs. defense to determine the outcome of the game. Cristiano Ronaldo and his teammates will attempt to pepper Gianluigi Donnarumma’s net and giving the stature of both clubs, expect this game to have some fireworks.

From Europian champions to not in Europe at all?

AC Milan are a team that has had a disappointing season given the stature of the club, sitting in 7th place now in Serie A and 29 points off league leaders, Juventus. The team comes into the game winning three of their last five matches in the league. At home this season, AC Milan averaged 1.43 points per game. However, in the last eight games, the club has registered an average of 1.75 points per game showing significant improvement.

Milan have earned a clean sheet in six of their last 14 home games, a percentage of 43%, showing promise that the San Siro is turning into a fortress once more for the Italian giants. 37% of AC Milan’s goals have been scored in the final 15 minutes of play, showing that will and desire to fight until the bitter end when both teams tire.

An interesting statistic for AC Milan would be that 21.4% of their results have ended in a 1-0 scoreline. This shows the team’s desire to protect a lead rather than brutally dismantle a team by scoring more goals.

The Old Lady on course for 36th Scudetto?

Over the past decade, Juventus has been a colossus in Italian football. Averaging a league-best of 2.50 points per game, which is absolutely staggering. This is followed up by another impressive statistic including scoring 1.60 goals per game. However, Juventus on average concedes 1.00 goal per game. To put it bluntly, isn’t fantastic, despite this, the team can show its ability to outscore opponents given their attacking firepower.

To further highlight Juventus’ attacking superiority, get a load of this statistic… They have scored three or more goals in 66.7% of their games. This is a godly statistic that the club will use to show other clubs they are yet to play, they play the game to win, and not just win, win ruthlessly.

Second top scorer in the league and sporting icon, Cristiano Ronaldo will be poised to earn his 26th goal this season. Since arriving at Juventus, Cristiano Ronaldo has scored 46 league goals in 57 appearances. The legend of the game showing he still has got the killer instinct in front of goal and remains hungry for more success.

Top Contributors

AC Milan top contributors:

  • Theo Hernandez (Defender) Despite playing left-back for AC Milan, Theo Hernandez has had a renaissance season at the San Siro for the side. Bagging five goals and one assist, Hernandez has become one of the most threatening fullbacks in the league, dominating the left flank for AC Milan. He has scored three goals on his left foot and two with his right, including a venomous volley against Udinese.
  • Ante Rebic (Forward) The Croatian international has bagged nine Serie A goals since joining AC Milan last summer on loan. Since the restart, Rebic has netted in 75% of the games played, forming a formidable partnership with veteran superstar Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Juventus top contributors:

  • Cristiano Ronaldo (Forward) Phenomenon, icon, legend, the list goes on for words to describe this man with a ball at his feet. With 25 league goals with a further four assists, Ronaldo continues to defy all logic at 35, still performing at the highest level week in, week out. Scoring in every single game since the restart for Juventus, it is difficult to argue why football fans around the world refer to him as the ‘G.O.A.T..’
  • Paulo Dybala (Forward) On the brink of leaving Juve for the Premier League in the summer of 2019, Dybala has taken this season to once more silence his critics. Scoring 11 goals and ten assists, showing his prolific goal scoring talent mixed with the vision to play teammates in to score goals.

Thoughts on Sheffield Utd vs Spurs

It’s a significant game for both sides. The hosts are looking for a reaction after they have suffered three defeats from their last four in all competitions since the restart. For Spurs, they must get something from this game to match the hot-form of their fellow top four chasers. In the reverse fixtures, they shared the points in a 1-1 draw at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Heung-Min Son and George Baldock scored goals for both sides. It would be bitterly disappointing if the Blades were to throw away their amazing season by slumbering over the line in mid-table. For Spurs, no European football next season in what is an incredible new stadium would be fairly embarrassing on their part.

Have the Blades become blunt?

Before the suspension of the Premier League, Sheffield Utd were in 7th place only two points behind Man Utd with a game in hand. However, since the restart the hosts have not found their rhythm in front of goal, failing to score a goal in the games since ‘Project Restart’ began. They have also conceded seven goals in the Premier League in the first three games back, which led the team to fall from 7th to 9th, yet still in contention for European football places as there are only eight points between 9th and 5th place.

Efficiency has been the key to Chris Wilder’s men this season. Interestingly however, they have yet to beat any side above them in the table at the time of playing this season in 10 attempts. Despite their recent form, their league games still only average 1.97 goals per match, the lowest of any side in the league. They have won 1-0 home and away in 29% of their Premier League games this season. Sheffield Utd usually go into half time, like with the recent trend since the resumption of football, on level terms. In fact, 16 of their 31 games have seen them and their opponents enter halftime all square.

Huge test for Mourinho’s Spurs team

Spurs have not lost a game since the Premier League resumed playing two games, one win, and one draw. They have several key players back from injury, such as Harry Kane, who will look to get on the scoresheet to follow up his goal in the previous game against West Ham. Mourinho’s men know they have serious competition in the form of Manchester United, Chelsea, and Wolves for a top four spot. Not to forget Burnley and 3rd place Leicester City. Spurs are in 7th place, but only a point separates both these teams, so this match carries substantial significance in the race for European football next season.

One of the biggest struggles is the away form this season, which let them down massively and was a significant reason in the sacking of Mauricio Pochettino. They are averaging just 1.00 away PPG compared to a 1.88 home PPG. They have suffered six defeats in the league since Mourinho took over and have not put a run of games together beyond three. There has been goals scored and conceded in beyond the 80th minute mark in their opening two games back.

FA Cup 2019/20: When does it return? Cup upsets? Epic Results?

Cup action returns following the success of the Premier League’s ‘Project Restart’ campaign. We look at the state of play in the FA Cup and what to expect.

When is the FA Cup returning?

On May 29th, chief executive of the Football Association, Mark Bullingham announced the FA cup will return on the last weekend of June. This was following announcements made by the Government on the pandemic. Saturday 27th June marks the return of the prestigious cup competition, the FA Cup. The first game sees Manchester United travel to Carrow Road to take on Norwich City at 5:30 pm GMT. The action continues on Sunday 28th June, where Sheffield host Arsenal at 1:00 pm, whilst Chelsea travel to Leicester for the 4pm kick-off. The quarter-finals conclude with former Premier League champions’ Manchester City playing Newcastle at St. James Park at 6:30 pm.

How are these games being scheduled?

The quarter-final round of the FA cup will be played coinciding with the Premier League fixtures taking place on the same weekend. Whilst the Premier League will have games’ played multiple days throughout the weeks remaining of the competition, the FA Cup semi-final will be played on Saturday 18th July and Sunday 19th July. They will play the Final on 1st August, given the circumstances around COVID-19, these dates remain provisional until given government approval. The demanding schedule surrounding the English competitions will leave teams looking to use squad rotation more frequently, meaning the FA Cup could see opportunities given to the youth players of clubs still in the competition, highlighting the magic of the FA Cup remains.

Are FA Cup teams playing at their own stadiums?

The games for the quarter-final stage will take place at the stadiums of the team drawn at home for each game, copying the Premier League behind closed doors format. However, the venues for the semi-finals and the final are to be confirmed. The traditional venue of the Iconic Wembley Stadium may not play host to the semi-finalists and the finalists, despite this venue details are still to be released.

What time will kick off be in the FA Cup?

Manchester United travel to Carrow Road to take on Norwich City at 5:30 pm BST. The action to be continued on Sunday 28th June where Sheffield host Arsenal at 1:00 pm BST, Chelsea travel to Leicester for the 4 pm kick-off. The quarter-finals conclude with current Premier League champions’ Manchester City playing Newcastle at St. James Park at 6:30 pm.

What is the state of play in the FA Cup?

The remaining 8 teams in the competition all compete in the top tier of English football, the English Premier League. These teams have joined the competition in the third round. Manchester United 5th in the Premier League table faced off against a tough Wolves team that held United to a 0-0 draw. The replay at Old Trafford ended differently however, Juan Mata scored in a 1-0 for the Red devils to send them through to the 4th round against League 2 side Tranmere Rovers. United put 6 past a Tranmere side that could not match the ability of Manchester United’s play and the difference in quality was clearly shown on the day.

Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney got a dream fixture against the club where his legacy flourished. Manchester United played Derby County away from home and won the game 3-0 comfortably with a volley from Luke Shaw in the first half, followed by a brace from January loan signing, Odion Ighalo who has settled into life at Manchester United quickly.

Their opponents Norwich City took on Preston North End in the 3rd round, beating them 4-2 with help from a hat-trick from Norwich’s 19-year-old prodigy Adam Idah. They beat Burnley 2-1 at Turf Moor before recording a momentous win against Tottenham Hotspur on Penalties at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium.

Sheffield United have had an easier run than most teams, beating AFC Flyde 2-1, Millwall 2-0 and Reading 2-1. Sheffield United have come on leaps and bounds this season make it this far in the FA Cup and fighting for a place for European football in the Premier League, not bad for a newly promoted side. Arsenal has also had an easier run-in of games in the FA Cup this season, beating the likes of Portsmouth, Leeds, and Bournemouth. 4 out of the 5 goalscorers for Arsenal in the FA Cup this season have been academy graduates, with Reiss Nelson netting against Leeds, Emerging talent Bukayo Saka grabbing a goal against Bournemouth, and marksman Eddie Nketiah grabbing 2 more in the competition.

Leicester City had to overcome 3 championship sides in the previous rounds of the competition, playing Wigan Athletic, Promotion chasing Brentford and Birmingham City. The 2015/16 Premier League champions dismantled all 3 teams, showing why they are currently sat in the top 4 bracket of the Premier League table. With the enormous game against Chelsea, they will be without fan-favourite Ricardo Pereira, who has been ruled out for the rest of the season following damaging knee ligaments in March.

Chelsea will see this as wonderful news, as they reach this stage of the competition after knocking out Premier League front runners and soon to be champions, Liverpool FC. The game in which the young central midfield prodigy Billy Gilmour put on a dazzling display on his debut. They too have had to face championship sides in the 3rd and 4th round of the FA Cup. Playing Nottingham Forest in a 2-0 win, before beating Hull City 2-1 away from home.

The final 2 teams and the last teams to play in the quarter-final action are Newcastle United and Manchester City. Newcastle have played 2 games which resulted in replays so far this season, initially drawing against Peterborough and Oxford United, before beating them. In their most recent game, they beat West Brom in a 3-2 victory which saw Miguel Almiron grab 2 goals, taking his total tally to 4 in the competition. Manchester City have scored 9 goals in the competition this season, the second most currently still in the competition to their Neighbours and city rivals, Manchester United who have scored 10.

A straight forward run for the champions who beat Port Vale 4-1, which will be marked by Port Vale’s Tom Pope’s goal as he stated on his twitter page prior to the game he would “Love to play against John  stones, I’d score 40 a season!” It has been an easy road for City to the quarterfinals, but they will have to overcome a Newcastle side that hasn’t lost a game since the restart.

What have been the talking points in FA Cup this season?

  • Aston Villa and Brighton both exited at the first hurdle in the FA Cup, losing to Fulham and Sheffield Wednesday respectfully. There are always upsets in the FA Cup, with the 2 teams fighting in the relegation battle at this present moment in time, exiting early was the main talking points of the 3rd round.
  • Liverpool FC, a borderline unstoppable force this season in the Premier League and bookies favourite to win the competition were knocked out by Chelsea in the 5th round, courtesy of a wonder goal by Ross Barkley to seal the game at 2-0.
  • Adam Idah became the youngest player in Norwich City history to score a hat-trick at the Professional level at 18 years old. This came in a 4-2 hammering of Preston North End. One player to monitor for the future.
  • Ricky-Jade Jones became the 9th youngest player to score a goal in the FA Cup since its establishment in 1871. His goal came in a 2-0 win for Peterborough against Stevenage.

Who are the top players in the FA Cup this season?

  • Harry McKirdy (Carlisle) The leading goalscorer in the FA Cup this season, despite Carlisle exiting the competition in the 3rd round in a 4-3 loss to Cardiff City. McKirdy has 5 goals and 1 assist in 313 minutes of football, meaning he averaged a goal every 63 minutes which is absurd at any level of competition. Whilst, not a household name, McKirdy has definitely held his own during this FA Cup campaign.
  • Adam Idah (Norwich City) Already mentioned a handful of times in this FA Cup review but what this young center-forward has accomplished in such little game time at Norwich is mesmerizing. Scoring a hat-trick at 18 years of age in the most historic club competition in English football is something worth shouting about. Next up for him is a game against 12-time winners of the FA Cup, Manchester United, and all eyes will be on this youngster to see if he can produce against the big guns left in the competition.
  • Ross Barkley (Chelsea) The Englishman has not been a consistent starter for Frank Lampard at Chelsea, but this FA Cup campaign has helped give fresh life to Ross Barkley’s career. He has contributed to a goal or assist every game he’s played in. Including a Man of the Match performance against run-away Premier League leaders’ Liverpool.
