Union Berlin vs Bayern Munich

“Heavy defeats for Eintracht before the break saw them fall down the table in what has been an inconsistent season of highs and lows. On their day, they can put any side to the sword, having cost some reputable managers their jobs this season, but have struggled since the turn of the year. Monchengladbach are enjoying a fine season under Marco Rose and have dusted themselves down after a close defeat to Dortmund. They are excellent on the road, and could edge this tight affair.”

Debut Delight for East Germans

In their debut season in the Bundesliga, few would have predicted that Union Berlin would be as high as 11th with nine games to play. The side won promotion from the 2. Bundesliga last season after shocking VfL Stuttgart in the Relegation Play-off match and have not failed to carry forward momentum into the top flight. Veterans such as Neven Subotic and Christian Gentner have added experience to the side who have a very solid home record. They have only lost two of their last eight games at home.

Manager Urs Fischer has overseen some memorable victories, including a 3-1 home win over Borussia Dortmund earlier in the season. Union have not been too leaky at the back either. They have conceded the least amount of goals of any team below 8th place in the table with 41. They have kept clean sheets in six of their nine wins this season, and five of their wins have been a 2-0 scoreline (55%). A 2-1 defeat in the reverse fixture proves they can compete, and they could keep things close again in this one.

Usual Business resumes for Bayern

It was a big talking point earlier in the season when Bayern let go of coach Niko Kovac, who fell short of the extremely high expectations of the Munich club. With some unbelievable performances in the Champions League, including the 7-2 drumming of Tottenham Hotspur in London, the club moved in a new direction and Hans-Dieter Flick has overseen a ruthless and free-scoring side in the league once again. Bayern have won 10 of their last 11, and have only failed to score once this season, holding Leipzig to a 0-0 stalemate.

Munich are averaging nearly 4 goals per league match (3.96), with four goals being scored in eight of their 25 league games this season. Robert Lewandowski has been averaging a goal a game and it will be difficult to see how he won’t return to goal-scoring form after this break. The resurgence of Thomas Muller’s importance to the team reflects in his 16 assists this season so far, the most of any player in the league. This game comes the day after their title rivals play, so Bayern might extend the gap at the top.

Bayern Munich Betting tip – Second Half Goals Bayern Munich Over 1.5 (21/20* with Mark Jarvis)
