Thoughts on Union Berlin vs Schalke
“The two out-of-form sides in the Bundesliga have an enormous opportunity to gain some points. Newly promoted Union Berlin take on the free-falling Schalke at the Stadion an der Alten Försterei for the first time in their history. The visitors edged the hosts in the reverse fixture during a time many considered Schalke dark horses for the title. A few months later and they are in the bottom half of the table. Neither of these teams can find the net, so I expect a low-scoring game in this one. Double chance or draw not bet could provide value.”
Union winless in six
It has not been a glorious return so far for Union. No wins and just a 1-1 draw to their name sees the hosts needing more points before they can secure safety in their historic season. Union Berlin are currently in 14th on 31 points, just four points ahead of relegation-playoff club Dusseldorf in 16th.
The stats are not looking great heading into this one. The East Germans have conceded the first goal in each of their last five games. However, they have scored twice in four of their last seven home Bundesliga games. Also, they have a much better home record than away. Union currently have a 1.43 home PPG, compared to a 0.73 away PPG.
Can S04 end this losing streak?
Contrasting starts and ends to the season sees S04 in a measly mid-table position. The Gelsenkirchen giants are on a horrendous run of form, one of the worse in the club’s history. They have just one win this calendar year in the league and are on a 11-match run without a win. A home defeat by Werder Bremen last time out was their fourth-consecutive defeat.
Similarly to Union, the stats are not looking pleasing for the visitors ahead of this one. Since the start of 2020, they have scored just five Bundesliga goals, conceded a damaging 25. Since January, Schalke have operated without a natural goal-scoring number nine. They have won just 29% of away games. S04 have not won away in eight attempts.
