Chelsea vs Ajax
Who? Chelsea vs Ajax in Group H of Matchweek 4 of the UEFA Champions League 2019/20
Where? Stamford Bridge, London
When? 20:00 GMT, Tuesday 5th November 2019
Matchweek 4 of the UEFA Champions League sees last season’s Europa League champions Chelsea host Champions League Semi-Finalists Ajax in Group H at Stamford Bridge.
Frank Lampard’s team put their midweek cup exit behind them to win last time out against Watford. That makes it eight wins in nine matches, including the last time they met Ajax in Amsterdam. The success on the pitch is coming with young England talent too. Striker Tammy Abraham now has nine league goals this season, whilst Mason Mount has four goals and Callum Hudson-Odoi already has three assists in a handful of minutes. The defence looks more compact with England under 21 star Fikayo Tomori part of the defensive back line.
The Dutch champions took a rare defeat against Chelsea last time out. That is still their only defeat of the season in all competitions. However, the time to avenge has arrived. If last season’s exploits in the Champions League are anything to go by, Ajax travel well away from home. Memorable victories over the likes of Real Madrid, Juventus and Tottenham meant Ajax had one foot in the Final. Retaining Donny van de Beek and Hakim Ziyech, alongside adding Quincy Promes to the attacking options, means it is rare Ajax won’t find the net regardless of the opposition.
Chelsea (10/11* to Win): Ross Barkley and Antonio Rudiger will not be available for selection. Emerson Palmieri, Andreas Christensen and N’Golo Kante may all feature after being out of action for a short period. We expect Tammy Abraham to lead the frontline, with Olivier Giroud and Michy Batshuayi providing options off the bench.
Ajax (3/1* to Win): No injury concerns ahead of this fixture means Erik Ten Hag has a full squad to select from. We expect a similar looking frontline of David Neres, Quincy Promes, and Hakim Ziyech to feature. Former Premier League players in the Ajax squad include former Southampton forward Dusan Tadic, Newcastle forward Siem de Jong and Manchester United defender Daley Blind.
Chelsea’s only meeting with Ajax was the reverse fixture in this group this season. The Blues impressively grabbed a 1-0 victory.
