Barcelona vs Inter Milan
Who? Barcelona vs Inter Milan in Matchweek 2 of the UEFA Champions League (Live on BT Sport)
Where? Nou Camp, Barcelona
When? 20:00 GMT, Wednesday 2nd October 2019
The two big names to clash in this Matchweek 2 set of fixtures see 5-time Champions League winners Barcelona host a reincarnated Italian side Inter Milan at Camp Nou in Group F.
Seen as the group of death, both these sides struggled in their opening Champions League games in Matchweek 1. Barcelona could not break down Dortmund in a goalless draw in Germany and have lost twice in their opening seven games in La Liga. Messi has struggled with injury problems and the main highlight of Barca’s season has been the breakout campaign for the 16-year-old Ansu Fati. They will hope to take advantage of playing at home and get a first win in the group this season.
Inter Milan’s start to the season has been a huge shock, with six wins from six as I Nerazzurri are looking to become a dominant force in Serie A once again. Their Champions League start has been the only disappointment so far, as they were seconds away from a defeat by Group F’s underdogs Slavia Prague but netted to make it 1-1. This will arguably be their toughest fixture in the group. Tactician Antonio Conte will relish the challenge of overcoming the huge test in coming away from the Camp Nou with important points.
Barcelona: Ernesto Valverde may just be able to risk Lionel Messi and Ousmane Dembele on the bench for the hosts. A battle for the right back spot is on the cards, as both Sergi Roberto and Nelson Semedo are in contention. We still expect Clement Lenglet to start despite being sent off on the weekend in La Liga.
Inter Milan: It will delight Antonio Conte to have a full squad to choose from ahead of the visit to Catalonia. Alexis Sanchez could start or come off the bench against his former club, as Conte may opt for the pacy Valentino Lazaro. We know the Italian coach liked his three-man defence in England, and we expect him to play experienced pros Diego Godin, Stefan de Vrij and Milan Škriniar.
Barcelona: Antoine Griezmann
The French forward and major summer signing has scored three goals in eight games and feels he is still adapting to the Barcelona style of play. With doubts over the fitness of Leo Messi and Ousmane Dembele, Griezmann will need to the step up. The interesting battle will be himself and former team mate Diego Godin. The two go head-to-head for different clubs, having both played several years at Atletico Madrid.
Inter Milan: Romelu Lukaku
Romelu Lukaku is one of two players to leave Manchester United this summer, alongside Alexis Sanchez. The pair have bought a new life to Inter under coach Antonio Conte. The striker has been in good goal-scoring form, having scored three goals in six league games. Lukaku was best known for his goals in last season’s Champions League tie away to PSG for Manchester United. The Belgian striker has another chance to become a big-game player for his new club.
Wednesday’s game will be the 13th competitive meeting between the two sides. Both teams were in the same group last season in the Champions League and claimed four points from the two fixtures. Overall, Barcelona has six wins compared to Inter’s two.
One of those Inter victories is one of the most memorable in Champions League history. Jose Mourinho out-mastered Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona to win 3-1 at the Camp Nou in the Semi-Finals.
