Liverpool vs RB Salzburg
Who? Liverpool vs Salzburg in Matchweek 2 of the UEFA Champions League (Live on BT Sport)
Where? Anfield, Liverpool
When? 20:00 GMT, Wednesday 2nd October 2019
Reigning Champions League winners Liverpool host Austrian champions and Group E dark horses Salzburg to Anfield in Matchweek 2 of the UEFA Champions League.
The Reds will hope their perfect home record can restore some order in the group having lost 2-0 in Matchweek 1 to Napoli. Having scraped through a win at Bramall Lane on the weekend against newly promoted Sheffield United, Liverpool will need to be far better if they are to overturn a team like Salzburg who do not lose often themselves. There are ties between the two clubs, as both Sadio Mane and Naby Keita formerly played for the opposition a few years ago.
Regardless of league quality, scoring 55 goals in 12 games is quite some going and should be a warning to Liverpool. Out of those 12 games, Salzburg have scored at least twice and if Liverpool give the visitors similar chances to those of Sheffield United on the weekend, they could be punished. Salzburg hit SIX against Genk in Matchweek 1 that included a hat-trick for teenage sensation Erling Haaland.
Liverpool: Jürgen Klopp is still without first-choice goalkeeper Alisson Becker who is not ready for a return yet. Nathaniel Clyne is out long term whilst Joel Matip and Xherdan Shaqiri are likely to miss out through injury. We expect former Salzburg players Sadio Mane and Naby Keita to feature against their former club.
RB Salzburg: The main man Erling Haaland could be doubtful because of illness for American coach Jesse Marsch, but will probably feature. Marin Pongracic and Hee-Chan Hwang could be available after featuring on the weekend. However, Antoine Bernede and Alexander Walke remain unavailable for selection.
Liverpool: Roberto Firmino
The Brazilian forward’s worthiness to the way Liverpool attack and win games has deservedly put under the spotlight this season. When out of the team, the intelligence to drop short and drag defenders towards him to create space is not there with the different style Divock Origi brings. With Salzburg looking to be compact, Firmino’s skillful movement and passing could be the answer to unlock the Austrian champion’s defence.
RB Salzburg: Erling Haaland
A former player under Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Norwegian striker Erling Haaland has been in sensational goal-scoring form. 17 goals in his last ten games, including four hat-tricks with one coming on Matchweek 1 against Genk, has everyone in the footballing world keeping close tabs on the 19-year-old. Will he be able to deliver against the European champions despite not being at 100% fitness?
These sides face each other for the first time in their history. Liverpool have a solid record against Austrian teams, having won four out of six games with fellow teams from the country. They have not lost at home in a European competition for nearly four years. That dates back to a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Real Madrid in October 2014.
Salzburg themselves do not have a great record in England, having never won in four games. However, they have only lost one of their last 17 away European games (including Europa League).
