A tasty tie in the Fourth Round of the English EFL Cup sees Premier League giants Chelsea and Manchester United go head-to-head at Stamford Bridge for a place in the Quarter Finals.
The Reds currently sit fourth in the league, having continued an incredible winning streak as of late under Frank Lampard. Having only entered the competition in the last round, Chelsea destroyed Grimsby Town 7-1. A brace from Michy Batshuayi and a first goal for Reece James were just some goals that sealed their place in the next round. The Blues have won seven games in a row, including a 1-0 away win at Ajax and a 4-2 victory at Burnley last time out. With a smaller squad size than others, Lampard may need to rotate his side for the league and Champions League.
For Manchester United, some huge pressure has come off Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Having Anthony Martial back and in the side has made a big difference for the Red Devils. He has contributed to them winning their last two matches in a row, as they look to build some momentum and climb up the table. They were very close to not being in this competition however, as Rochdale rocked up to a confidence-shot United and almost secured a shock for the ages. United progressed on penalties and have a huge task to stop this Chelsea side, but have already beaten them this season.
Chelsea (10/11* to Win): Frank Lampard is likely to make some changes from the 4-2 win over Burnley on Saturday night. We expect Willy Caballero to come in for Kepa in goal. Exciting youngsters Reece James, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Billy Gilmour could all feature for the Blues. Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Antonio Rudiger are still out with injuries.
Manchester United (3/1* to Win): Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will give more first team action to youngsters Brandon Williams and James Garner. Jesse Lingard, Marcus Rashford and Dan James could make up the front line for United. This will depend on whether Solskjaer wants to ease Martial back or give him more minutes. Paul Pogba and Luke Shaw are still unavailable.
In 184 meetings since 1905, Manchester United have a comfortably better record over Chelsea with 79 wins and 51 draws compared to Chelsea’s 54 wins.
The Blues have not won in the last four meetings between the sides. They have won twice in the last eight games, both by a 1-0 scoreline at home.
Prior to April 2017, Chelsea went on a 12 match unbeaten streak against United, winning seven and drawing five between 2013 to March 2017.
Before the opening game of this season’s 4-0 scoreline to United, the last eight games have seen either side only score two goals or fewer.
