Manchester United vs Rochdale
Who? Manchester United vs Rochdale in the English EFL Cup Third Round
Where? Old Trafford, Manchester
When? 20:00 GMT, Wednesday 25th September 2019
Manchester United host local League One side Rochdale at Old Trafford in the late kick-off in the Third Round of the English EFL Cup.
Ole Gunnar Solskjær continues to come under criticism, alongside the board, after a 2-0 defeat in the league to West Ham on the weekend. With a depleted frontline out through injury, he will be reliant on more youth to help him save any potential blushes against lower league opposition.
It has been a tough time for Rochdale too, who are yet to pick up a win this month having secured four wins in August. Dale has two wins in the league and two in the EFL Cup, having beat Bolton and Carlisle. Goal-scoring veteran Ian Henderson has four goals in all competitions alongside midfielder Callum Camps.
Manchester United: Ole Gunnar Solskjær is under more pressure than ever regarding the team he selects. Marcus Rashford, Paul Pogba, Anthony Martial and Luke Shaw are out injured. Angel Gomes, Sergio Romero, Tahith Chong are favourites to start. Solskjær might play Jesse Lingard as a lone striker with no other senior player available in that position.
Rochdale: Brian Barry-Murphy might have to play midfielder Jimmy Ryan at centre back in place of Eughan O’Connell. Experienced striker Aaron Wilbraham could make an appearance off the bench. The pacy Tyler Magloire is doubtful to play after recovering from a groin injury.
Manchester United: Tahith Chong
The young Dutch winger struggled in his last outing against Astana in the UEFA Europa League. However, his second chance at impressing Ole and the fans comes at a crucial time. The youth need to step up in the absence on key first-team players, and Chong could be the standout player in this fixture.
Rochdale: Callum Camps
The attacking midfielder has been a standout performer in an inconsistent Rochdale side this season. Camps has scored twice and created three assists in nine games for Dale. The 23-year-old should relish playing against an inexperienced United side and setting up a chance or two for his striker.
Despite only being a few miles apart, the sides have only met once before in 1986. Manchester United were victors in a 2-0 win in the FA Cup thanks to goals from Frank Stapleton and Mark Hughes.
