Arsenal host Belgian side Standard Liege in Matchweek 2 of the UEFA Europa League as the two sides battle to take top spot in Group F.
The Gunners impressed away from home to Eintracht Frankfurt in Matchweek 1. Arsenal came away 3-0 winners which including a goal from the 18-year-old talent Bukayo Saka. A solid show of form in the league means they are now unbeaten in six games in all competitions. The young guns are likely to start and put their talents to the test against an established Liege side.
The visitors also got off to a solid start in the Europa League, winning 2-0 against Vitoria despite only five shots all game. Their league form has also been solid, having won eight of their opening 11 games in all competitions. Les Rouges have built a reputation this season for late goals. The second goal scored against Vitoria coming in the 90th minute, whilst scoring in the 90th minute in their last two games.
Arsenal: Unai Emery could give starts to the injury-returning duo Kieran Tierney and Hector Bellerin. Youngsters Joe Willock and Reiss Nelson are likely to feature in the starting XI. Does Unai fancy out-of-favour Mesut Ozil, having not made the squad against Manchester United?
Standard Liege: Michel Preud’homme will only be without former Reading and Fulham attacker Orlando Sa. Impressive attacker Anthony Limbombe could cause some problems. The former Club Brugge striker is currently on loan from French club Nantes. He was linked with a move to the Premier League in the summer.
Arsenal: Reiss Nelson
The disappointing form of Nicolas Pepe, who is yet to adjust to the English game, gives Reiss Nelson a chance to claim a starting place on the right wing going forward. The young English talent spent time on loan in Germany at Hoffenheim last season. He has been one of several youngsters to get chances this season and could break into the first team if he impresses enough.
Standard Liege: Paul-José M’Poku
The Congolese striker was a part of Arsenal rivals, Tottenham’s, youth academy. Now 27, he has worked his way up to Europa League football with Liege having played in Italy and Greece. M’Poku has scored three times in nine games, including a goal in Matchweek 1 of the Europa League against Vitoria.
It has been a decade since these teams last met competitively in the Champions League. In the two games, Arsenal secured two wins with a 2-0 home win at 3-2 away win. However, Liege took a 2-0 lead in their home game after five minutes. Arsenal got goals from Nicklas Bendtner, Thomas Vermaelen and Eduardo da Silva to complete a resilient comeback.
