AZ Alkmaar vs Manchester United
Who? AZ Alkmaar vs Manchester United in Matchweek 2 of the UEFA Europa League (Live on BT Sport)
Where? Kyocera Stadium, Netherlands
When? 17:55 GMT, Thursday 3rd October 2019
Manchester United travel to The Netherlands to take on AZ Alkmaar in Matchweek 2 in Group L of the UEFA Europa League desperately needing a positive result.
The hosts are hosting United at a different stadium having had part of the roof collapse in their own stadium. The game is being played on an artificial surface. In the league, AZ have been making a strong start in the Eredivisie. AZ have won their last four league games and sit in 3rd. They also impressively drew 2-2 with ten men for most of the game at Partizan in Matchweek 1.
United’s lack of quality and problems were on show in their Monday night clash with Arsenal. Having got a point in a dull 1-1 draw, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will have his squad stretched once again. With Newcastle United away on Sunday and United wanting to end a horrendous away record, this game will test how much he will rotate and have trust in his youth players.
AZ Alkmaar: Arne Slot only has one injury concern in midfielder Dani de Wit with a broken nose. One of the key players, however, Jonas Svensson, is unavailable for AZ as he is serving a suspension having picked up a red card in Matchweek 1 against Partizan.
Manchester United: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will start Juan Mata in the game after the Spaniard featured in the Europa League press conference. Paul Pogba might be risked, but Anthony Martial, Phil Jones, Luke Shaw, and Eric Bailly are out injured. Diogo Dalot is likely to play in place of the recovering Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Angel Gomes may only make the bench.
AZ Alkmaar: Calvin Stengs
Dutch teams consistently produce great young talent. The Eredivisie continues to be a great platform for young players. The next potential big star could be attackers Myron Boadu and Calvin Stengs. The left-footed winger Stengs, who usually plays off the right, has an impressive six goals and seven assists in 15 games this season. He could cause huge problems for Marcos Rojo at left-back.
Manchester United: Mason Greenwood
The young striker has only just celebrated his 18th birthday recently, but has an important first team player because of the injuries to United frontline positions. Greenwood has some of the best finishing and composure in front of goal at his age group, and could net another big goal in the Europa League having scored in Matchweek 1 against Astana.
The two teams have not faced each other before and will make history.
Manchester United last placed a Dutch team in this competition in 2017. United beat Ajax in the Final 2-0 to lift the Europa League trophy.
AZ Alkmaar win record against English teams is not too great. With two wins out of seven, the last time AZ faced an English club was Arsenal who they drew 1-1 and lost 4-1 to in the 2009/10 campaign.
