Thoughts on Istanbul Basaksehir vs Galatasaray
It’s derby time in Istanbul where leader Basaksehir will take on last year’s title winners Galatasaray. On paper, hosts are looking way better than guests, undefeated in nine games with chief hopes to make it 10 after the final whistle. We cannot say the same thing about The Yellow-Reds. The team has suffered a tremendous regress in the last games. They got only one point since Super Lig return in mid-June.
Fun fact: Former Galatasaray legend Okan Buruk manages Istanbul Basaksehir, whilst Fatih Terim manages Galatasaray, the man they named Basaksehir’s stadium after.
It will be a tough game for Galatasaray, with them being 7 points adrift of Basaksehir. The teams have already met this season when The Lions hosted their game at Turk Telekom Stadium. The match has ended 1-0 to Basaksehir that time. It’s fair to say Galatasaray desperately needs three points in this one with 5th in-form Besiktas breathing down their neck.
Basaksehir to maintain leaders?
It’s revenge time for Basaksehir. The team for two last consecutive seasons have back to back got very close to win a league by both times losing to 1st Galatasaray. The team was only 2 points adrift from winning the league last season. With them currently sitting on 59 points and 2nd Trabzonspor on 57, they can not afford to lose. In a worst-case scenario, the draw won’t be enough to keep them in 1st after this game week.
According to statistics, Basaksehir plays better at home. It should be a relief that the team are hosting the game as they are averaging 2.43 GPG, compared to 1.43 GPG away. Moreover, the team doesn’t give away points that easy as they’ve lost only once and drawn three times when playing at Fatih Terim Stadium. Only 3rd Sivasspor holds a better home record. All eyes should be on Edin Visca against Galatasaray, Basaksehir’s vitalist part of the squad. The Bosnian contributed to 21 league goals this season which is approximately 39% of 54 scored so far.
Injuries to be Galatasaray’s ball and chain?
The Yellow-Reds have been Super Lig’s champions for two consecutive seasons. Now the time has changed as they are drifting away from their very much desired 3rd consecutive Super Lig title. Galatasaray haven’t started their league return very well. The team was undefeated in 10 league games until 15th Caykur Rizespor beat them in the game since Super Lig resumption. After an embarrassing 2-0 defeat, The Yellow-Reds have also drawn 3-3 with 10th Gaziantep FK. The team needs to change things around If they think of qualifying to next season’s European Cups.
The 3-3 draw against Gaziantep last time out came as a shocker, as the team doesn’t lose that many goals at home or away. The only thing Galatasaray can be proud of this season is their defence. The team concedes the lowest in the league 0.89 goals per game all thanks to remarkable performance some players have put on.
However, lack of Radamel Falcao, Florin Andone, Fernando Muslera and most defenders being suspended or injured has put Galatasaray in a very uncomfortable position. Now everything is in Fatih Terim’s hands of how he will revive his out of form squad.
