Thoughts on Galatasaray vs Trabzonspor
Only five matchweeks are left until the end of the season. Both sides will desperately try to seal the win in this one. Trabzonspor is sitting on 2nd place with only two points away from their desired top place currently occupied by Basaksehir. Galatasaray, on the other hand, is 4th so far with only one point separating them from 3rd Sivasspor.
It’s a big clash between underdog Galatasaray who has been unsuccessfully trying to end their embarrassing winless streak and Trabzonspor who has a bigger chance than ever to win their very much desired Super Lig title after 36 years. It’s the guests that present themselves much more appealing and better on the paper than the hosts. However, Turk Telekom Stadium isn’t a place to be underestimated. The Yellow-Reds have been doing wonders on their turf for years now and many times they have surprised the opposition with their defence.
Galatasaray desperately needs a win!
The tea time is over for The Yellow-Reds If they still aspire to be in the Champions League next season. The team and the staff will need to find a solution, despite all the obstacles in the form of injuries and suspensions, in order to seal a win in the league game. With five games yet to be played and six points difference from Trabzonspor (which could be significantly shortened after this clash), there’s still a chance for them to see the light at the end of the tunnel.
Galatasaray’s stadium this season is a fortress were opposition doesn’t score many goals, If any. The team concedes only 0.73 goals per game at Turk Telekom Stadium, which is the very lowest in the league so far. The morale of the squad might be a little down with them struggling to win for the last five matches. Without Radamel Falcao in front, it’s probable to see yet again Emre Akbaba to be in charge of the team’s offensive. The Turk has been the sole scorer for Galatasaray in the last game against Basaksehir.
The injuries have been the team’s ball and a chain and nothing seemed to change against Basaksehir last time out. This time it was Mario Lemina who got substituted. The Gabonese is expected to return on 9th July. The team was already playing with two defensive midfielders in the centre back position in the last Istanbul derby. The task will be much more difficult this time, therefore Galatasaray will need to give it all to prevent them from losing this very important match.
Unbeaten in 22 games Trabzonspor to make it 23?
Trabzonspor have done one of the riskiest, yet smartest moves in the last years by hiring unexperienced Huseyin Cimsir as a new manager in January 2020. The team under the fresh management hasn’t lost a single game and produced an astonishing 30 goals in only 11 league games. The team is doing an impressive job so far and is only two points away from the 1st place, which could change soon.
According to statistics, Trabzonspor performs way better at away games. The team have lost only one match but recorded only two clean sheets this season when playing as visitors. Their away 1.93 PPG is the best among the teams so far, but would have been even better If the team didn’t share so many points with the opposite team (six times). Both Abdulkadir Omur and Alexander Sorloth have scored a goal and recorder one assist in the last three league games and are among a few that would have an enormous influence on the final result of the upcoming clash against Galatasaray.

Galatasaray top contributors:
- Radamel Falcao (Forward): 11 Super Lig goal involvements: 10 goals + 1 assist – The Colombian striker scored an opener in 36th minute against Gaziantep on 21st June. Later on in the game, got injured and substituted in 80th minute and it’s very doubtful to see him on the pitch this season.
- Omer Bayram (Midfielder): 11 Super Lig goal involvements: 1 goal + 10 assists – One of the vitalist parts of Galatasaray’s midfield. He has also broken his personal all-time record with 10 assists in the single Super Lig season.
Trabzonspor top contributors:
- Alexander Sorloth (Forward): 28 Super Lig goal involvements: 20 goals + 8 assist – An unwanted child of Crystal Palace who absolutely predominates Super Lig with his numbers whilst being on loan in Trabzonspor. Luckily for the club, he is expected to end his Turkish journey after the end of 2020/21 season If Crystal Palace won’t interfere.
- Anthony Nwakaeme (Midfielder): 17 Super Lig goal involvements: 11 goals + 6 assists – The Nigerian has been a very important part of the squad since joining in 2018/19 season. The 31-years-old recorded an assist in the first game played since Super Lig suspension, but following his after-match injury, he was unavailable until 3rd July. We expect him to play against Galatasaray.
