Thoughts on Exeter City vs Northampton Town
It’s the first trip to Wembley since the enforced break as the EFL League Two season can finally finish. These two sides have had quick turnarounds, having played two matches in the space of a few days in the Playoff Semi Finals. Just a week on, the Playoff Final has come around for these two sides who are yet to hit full match sharpness.
The markets are extremely close in this one, as both sides are just about the same in price to secure a place in League One next season. Exeter City, the slightest of favourites in this tie, had a very solid campaign this season. They only lost once at home, but struggled on the road with eight defeats.
Northampton Town meanwhile, managed by Keith Curle, struggled for consistency before the enforced break, with five defeats from seven. However, they clinched a playoff spot and by seeing off Cheltenham in a huge aggregate comeback, are potentially 90 minutes away from England’s third tier.
The Grecians know all to well about the heartbreak of a League Two Playoff Final defeat. They have secured two trips to Wembley Stadium in recent years and have lost on both occasions. In 2017, they lost to Blackpool, and in 2018, they suffered defeat to the now Championship-promoted Coventry City. Another trip back, without the fans this time, will be another emotional and damaging one if they were to fail once again.
In terms of the stats, Exeter City have been solid in the league and in the Playoff Semi Finals. They kept the most clean sheets in the league with 15, that is a clean in 38% of their league games. They also only failed to score in 17% of league games this season. In the second leg of the Semi Final, they scored inside the first minute. Each of the last four EFL League Two Playoff Winners have been teams that have scored first.
The Cobblers produced one of the best comebacks in EFL Playoff history. Northampton Town turned the defensively sound Cheltenham Town over 3-0 away from home after suffering a 2-0 defeat at Sixfields in the first leg. It seems they, like Exeter, could quickly dust off their first match back and come up with a winning game plan. A week to prepare for this clash might be enough time once again for Keith Curle’s men to pull off another incredible result. This will be Town’s first Final since 2013, which they lost 3-0 to Bradford City.
Heading into this one, Northampton Town might want to hope history can repeat. They have the better H2H record over their opponents, who have only lost three of the last 12 meetings, winning seven. They finished second in the charts for winning games at halftime, leading in 46% of their League Two games. They have scored first in nine of their last 13 matches. Second half goals are a huge feature, with 79% of matches this season having at least one second half goal.
