Thoughts on Porto vs Sporting
Is there any chance at that point to dethrone a very comfortable sitting in 1st FC Porto? In the best-case scenario, a draw in the upcoming weeks will be enough to secure a league title this year. 2nd Benfica with five points away from the leaders is only down to two matches whilst Porto with 76 points is yet to play three.
Guests with 59 points to their name are now 3rd and might move into 4th with Braga breathing down their neck. The team have secured their way up to European Cups next season and are out of reach to overtake 2nd Benfica. Now it has all come down to whether Sporting will end up 3rd or 4th this year.
Famous Lions seem to very much attach themselves to the 3rd place in the standings making them back to back the best team in Liga NOS right after Portuguese giants – FC Porto and SL Benfica – for three consecutive years and potentially with the four to come. A draw in this one could keep them in their spot until the end of the season. FC Porto, on the other hand, is now solely focused on sealing an automatic qualification to Champions League next season. If everything goes as planned, we might see streets of Porto get filled today with the fans celebrating yet another league championship.
Another clean sheet at Estadio do Dragao?
It’s the night all FC Porto fans have been impatiently waiting for. Their beloved club can win yet another (29th) league title if they manage to win over 3rd Sporting. The team started off with a very shocking defeat with Famalicao in their first match in the Liga NOS return. Since then they have been undefeated by securing five clean sheets and sharing the points with opposition only once.
You just can’t get past Porto’s defence at their own stadium. The highest home PPG among the teams – 2.67 – and only six goals conceded tells us a lot about their offensive and defensive abilities. Likes of Moussa Marega and Alex Telles scoring most goals or Jesus Corona always looking to assist his fellow teammates have contributed massively to their highest in the league 2.40 home GPG.
Goodbye 3rd place?
The revitalised Sporting have been performing very effectively since Liga NOS return. They haven’t lost a single match and drifted away from Braga with three points difference. The loss in this one could cost them very much earned 3rd place and put them in a very uncomfortable position to fight their way up. The splendid news for Sporting is no matter of the results in the upcoming fixtures will play in the European Cups, as 5th Famalicao is too far away to thwart Lions’ plans for Europa League next season.
There are teams who perform way better or as good away and at home like Benfica or Rio Ave this season. Sporting, however, have proved severally that they are much stronger of a team when playing at their own ground. They are averaging second-best 2.25 home PPG compared to 1.53 away PPG. However, they have been unbeaten since Liga NOS return and shared the points only twice. Moreover, they have shockingly registered four clean sheets in the least seven matches thanks to wonderful defensive job and young Luis Maximano’s solid performance in goal.

FC Porto top contributors:
- Alex Telles (Defender): 16 Primeira Liga goal involvements: 10 goals + 6 assists – The Brasilian defender is Portuguese top flight’s 5th best contributor this season. He has scored 2 goals and assisted once since Primeira Liga return in June.
- Moussa Marega (Forward): 15 Primeira Liga goal involvements: 10 goals + 5 assists – The Malian striker has been a go-to option in front for Sérgio Conceição this season, as he played in 27 out of 31 games. The 29-years-old scored in the last two games and the question now is will he make it three?
Sporting CP top contributors:
