Thoughts on the 2020 3M Open

In event number seven since the restart of golf, we head to Minnesota and to the TPC Twin Cities for the second ever 3M Open event. Replacing the 3M Championship, the inaugural 3M Open in 2019 was a fantastic last day showdown. Young stars Bryson DeChambeau and Matthew Wolff featured, and it was Wolff who eagled to leapfrog the huge-hitter DeChambeau to the title. Last year, Wolff was just making his third event appearance before winning last year.

After six PGA events, this could be the first event we see a surprise winner land a victory since the resumption of action. We have been treated to some incredible fields and even saw Tiger Woods make his return to action at Muirfield last week. However, the field is considerably weaker because of the WGC and Players Championships coming up in the following weeks. Only eight of the top 50 players will take part at the private course in Blaine. An outsider or two could be in conversation on the back nine of Sunday, with Dustin Johnson the current favourite for the tournament despite an 80-80 missed cut last week.

Will Tommy Fleetwood’s fine-tuning pay off ahead of big three weeks

The 29-year-old Englishman has delayed his return to PGA action as late as possible to work on his game. Opting to return this week rather than next week at WGC is a smart move and he will hope to get all of his bad shots out this week ahead of two tremendous events coming up. After the cancelling of the Player’s Championship, he last featured at the Arnold Palmer Invitational in March where he missed the cut shooting 76-76.

This season he has two top 20 finishes and a 3rd place in the Honda Classic at the start of March. He is yet to win a PGA tour win, having come short four times as runner-up. All of his wins over the years have on the European Tour, with his most recent coming last year in South Africa. Fleetwood with share the first two rounds on the Blaine course with Tony Finau and tournament favourite Dustin Johnson in the featured group. The OWGR number 12 is one of the favourites in this weaker field at 14/1* with Mark Jarvis.
