Thoughts on the 2020 PGA Championship

With the restructuring of majors because of the enforced break, the PGA Championship becomes the first and most anticipated major tournament. The PGA Championship used to be the last tournament of four majors per year. But last year it was the second, and this year it will in fact be the first of just three majors. The US Open comes next month, whilst the Masters will be in November. With over 100 years of history and heritage, the PGA Championship could have its first ever three-peat champion in Brooks Koepka in its modern history. The only player to win it more than twice consecutively was Walter Hagen in the 1920s.

Interestingly, the form heading into this has something to say, even with this major being rescheduled. 17 of the last 20 winners of this event have won earlier in the PGA season, and with the likes of Brooks Koepka, Rory McIlroy and Jason Day winning the most recent editions of the PGA Championship, the recognised names usually secure the trophy on the Sunday.

However, a couple of times there have been some outside winners, including Jimmie Walker at the Baltusrol Golf Club in 2014, and Keegan Bradley became one of a select few to win on his major debut at Atalanta in 2011. After Koepka retained his title last year at Bethpage, four Americans have won the tournament on the bounce, the first time that has happened since the early 00s.

The course this year on the west coast present not the best weather for players, with temperatures expected to be down on what you would expect in San Francisco. It is the first time since 1998 that the PGA Championship heads for western USA. Rory McIlroy won a match play event at this course in 2015, with the Presidents Cup being held at TPC Harding Park back in 2009. Interestingly, players ranked inside the top 50 OWGR have won the last 32 majors, so even outside winners in recent majors have been players with strong ranks.

WGC St. Jude gave us exciting warmup!

Justin Thomas sealed the WGC St. Jude Invitational with a -5 last round score to win -13 for the tournament. The American was one of several players in the run-in for the trophy in Memphis, with the likes of Phil Mickelson, Daniel Berger and previous rounds leader Brooks Koepka in the mix. Thomas now has three wins this season alone, and the FedEx point leader just extended his lead at the top further. Once again Rory McIlroy could not keep up this week, finishing T47. Our picks last week also struggled at TPC Southwinds, with Jon Rahm and Viktor Hovland finishing outside the top 50 heading into the PGA Championship.

We also saw Dustin Johnson put in a much better performance this week, finishing T12 with -8 alongside RBC Heritage winner Webb Simpson. English duo Matt Fitzpatrick and Tom Lewis also had strong outings. Sheffield’s Fitzpatrick now has back-to-back top 10 finishes heading into the PGA Championship and is a 40/1* outsider to earn his first career major. Lewis managed his first top 10 finish since his potent form on the European Tour last year. He is a much higher price at 125/1* to go all the way this weekend.
