Thoughts on the 2020 Rocket Mortgage Classic
It’s event number four already for the PGA, however the lead up to the latest four-day swing in Detroit will raise more concerns than the previous three events. Five players have now tested positive in the latest rounds of testing, with established pros Harris English and Dylan Frittelli the latest to have the virus. If this trend continues, we may see another suspension in the PGA calendar sooner rather than later. But for the time being, another huge 156 player field head to Michigan to play at the Detroit Golf Club in this year’s Rocket Mortgage Classic.
The PGA have treated us to some incredible player fields in the first three events. The Charles Schwab Challenge, RBC Heritage, and Travelers Championship featured plenty of top 20 talent, including world number one Rory McIlroy playing at all three events. This week however, the field features fewer top 20 players, including our pick from last week Abraham Ancer who finished T10. Therefore, it gives in-form players such as Bryson DeChambeau, Webb Simpson, and Tyrrell Hatton a strong chance to clinch a win in Detroit.
Another Top 10 for Superb Bryson DeChambeau?
The American secured another strong finish last week, finishing T6 in Connecticut at the Travelers Championship. Bryson DeChambeau is the only player to secure top 10 finishes in the first three events back in the PGA. He is also on a six-event streak of top 10 finishes and is a favourite to go one further and seal a win in a weaker player field.
The bulked up 26-year-old could not get over the line in the last round of the Charles Schwab Challenge in Florida, finishing 3rd behind playoff pair Collin Morikawa and Daniel Berger. He managed a T8 as he was five shots off the pace set by winner Webb Simpson.
He made the headlines last weekend when his drive at the 10th at TPC River Highlands took several bounces on the cart path. His drive was 328, a fairly expected number for DeChambeau to strike, but 100 yards later, the ball stopped 428 yards on the par 4 and he still made a bogey. This came just one hole after he startled Jon Rahm on the green with a huge drive that saw his ball land near the Spaniard on the 389 yard Hole 9. A clear favourite for this event, we price DeChambeau at 6/1 to win at the Detroit Golf Club.
Clear warnings from the PGA
Last week, big names like Brooks Koepka, Graeme McDowell, and Webb Simpson, who had just won the RBC Heritage, had to pull out of the Travelers Championship. Their caddies tested positive and the PGA stated that there would be severe repercussions if the protocols were not being followed both on and off the courses going forward.
According to CBS Sports, the Tour had allowed players on-site but not in the clubhouse without a negative in-market COVID-19 test. They say that this is the first week it will not even allow players on site without a negative test.
