Sam’s Betting Tips – The Players Championship 2020

“Many deem The Players Championship as the most illustrious non-major event on the Tour. Defending champion Rory McIlroy has just finished the Arnold Palmer Invitational with another Top 5 finish this season. However, South Korean Sungjae Im has had a very solid couple of weeks in Florida. Im has carried momentum from his Honda Classic title win with a top 3 finish at Bay Hill last week. The 21-year-old continues to climb the player rankings and at 25/1 each way is a great shout at make another statement in The Sunshine State.”

  • Sungjae Im – 25/1* Outright

Course History – The Players Championship at Sawgrass 2020

Golf architects Pete and Alice Dye originally designed The Stadium Course (one of two courses at TPC at Sawgrass) in the late 1970s. After a year delay, The Players Championship (formerly Tournament Players Championship) moved the tournament to the new course in 1982, but many golfers were unhappy with the design. Several tweaks and a year later, TPC at Sawgrass is still one of the most difficult courses in the world with amazing resources to facilitate a sport stadium-like spectator presence around the course.

The course is 7,189 yards in length with a par 72 full of deep bunkers and tight fairways. One of the most famous par 3 holes in world golf, The Island Green at 17, provides the toughest of shots onto a green completely surrounded by water. The 137-yard hole is often where shot and club selection become very important late on in the tournament to judge the ball sitting on the 78-foot long green. Tiger Woods made an incredible 60-foot putt on this hole in the 2001 tournament. Dubbed the “Better than Most” putt, that sink helped Woods claim the title that year over Vijay Singh.

Podium Picks (Each way Price 1/4 on a Top 7 Finish)

Rory McIlroy (13/2* Outright) – The Northen Irishman and current World No. 1 has recorded Top 5 finishes in every tournament he has featured this season. A poor final round at Bay Hill ruined his chances of winning the Arnold Palmer last week, but there is little doubt he can record another Top 5 at Sawgrass.

Marc Leishman (40/1* Outright) – Australian Marc Leishman came one shot short of his second PGA title this season last week at Bay Hill, having already won the Farmers Insurance Open. Leishman has been a consistent Top 20 player and can claw back at leads late on. A disappointing record over the years at Sawgrass, Leishman will hope to build on his good play this year.
