Thoughts on the 2020 Travelers Championship
We are already into the third event of the month with the action-packed return of golf keeping us entertained. After the success of the Charles Schwab Challenge, we unfortunately had our first positive test since the return of professional golf. Nick Watney had to withdraw from the tournament in South Carolina, with those in close contact with the American needing further tests.
However, the Connecticut event, which features a much shorter course, is going ahead with an excellent field once again. Just like the previous two events, it will be a shock if we ever see player field as strong in years to come. Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, Dustin Johnson, Justin Thomas, and Bryson DeChambeau, the man we tipped last week, are just some big names featuring at the four-day tournament at TPC River Highlands.
Webb Simpson caps off Father’s Day with a record score
After missing the cut in the Charles Schwab Challenge, the American secured a victory in the RBC Heritage last week. The ultimate day fell on Father’s Day and Simpson edged his way above Abraham Ancer by one stroke to secure a -22 final score. That score smashed Brian Gay’s -20 back in 2009, and Simpson will be an appealing name to secure another title this weekend.
The 34-year-old’s price has dropped as he becomes one of the tournament favourites for the Travelers Championship. The US Open winner is an 18/1 second favourite behind Rory McIlroy, Bryson DeChambeau and Justin Thomas. It is his second tournament win this season, having already won the Waste Management Phoenix Open in February. He has never won three official events in a season.
Bubba Watson chasing event record
The 41-year-old was a solid outside tip for the RBC Heritage last week, and once again will fancy his chances at this event. Unfortunately, he could not carry over his performance from Fort Worth to South Carolina as he settled for a T52 finish with a -6 final score. However, he has won this event three times, most recently in 2018. No current player has won that many times. He can match Billy Casper if he can secure a fourth win on this course in Cromwell.
Watson struggled last year with a T52 finish, but he is more than capable of pulling off a victory on this course regardless of form. Winning here, with this field, will require the American to hit low 60 rounds, something he has pulled off twice in his two most recent Travelers Championship victories. Bubba is priced at 28/1 to win the tournament outright with Mark Jarvis.
More problems with positive tests this week?
We have seen positive cases arrive in the sports of golf and tennis among others on their returns. Just the one player from last week’s RBC Heritage had to withdraw in Nick Watney, however it raises the question whether that will be a one-off or the start of things to come. The increase in the player fields for these first few tournaments means an outbreak of the virus will affect more people than normal.
Watney withdrew before the Second Round in South Carolina despite not showing any symptoms on the golf course. That is according to his playing partners that day in Vaughn Taylor and Luke List.
