Thoughts on the 2020 WGC FedEx St. Jude Invitational

It’s just over one week to go until the first major since the enforced break as the PGA Championship returns. But first, we have a fantastic event in Tennessee in which the small field of 78 players will compete at TPC Southwind in the WGC FedEX St. Jude Invitational. The Memphis course is one of the most demanding and gruelling for players, with its small mounded greens and sizeable dogleg holes. It even has an island green hole on the back nine similar to that of the famous 17th at TPC Sawgrass.

All eight of the top eight ranked players are set to compete this week, however Tiger Woods will rest up ahead of next week. Woods has only played one event since the resumption of PGA action, playing four days in the Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Ohio, shooting +6 for the tournament with a T40 finish. For the first time in a while, it seems, Rory McIlroy will not go into Thursday’s opening round as the pre-tournament favourite.

Since the restart, McIlroy has finished outside the top 10 in all four of his appearances. We questioned whether he would be rusty all the way back at Charles Schwab Challenge last month. He most recently finished T32 at Memorial, an event won by Spaniard Jon Rahm who recently overtook Rory as World Number 1. Rahm is a 9/1* favourite, with McIlroy just behind at 11/1* to put aside his below par performances and secure his first official win of 2020.

Not a glorious week for the top players at 3M Open

Some favourites in the weaker field event in Minnesota struggled last week. Dustin Johnson, a pre-event favourite, had to withdraw because of injury. The returning Tommy Fleetwood failed to make the cut alongside the likes of Paul Casey, Luke Donald, and reigning WGC St. Jude Invitational champion Brooks Koepka. Our pick last week Harris English was in the conversation at the start of Sunday but unfortunately dropped outside the top 10 at the end of play. We did however see Henrik Norlander finish as a top three European, along with his fellow Swede Alex Noren.

Koepka shot one under, which just was not enough to see him get two more days around the course to prepare for his two titles defences coming up next. He needs a big result this week to earn invaluable FedEx points and be in the FedExCup Playoffs. His price to win coming into this week is 33/1*.

We saw defending champion and young prodigy Matthew Wolff put in another convincing performance as he finished T12 with -14. Californian Max Homa was another name touted to be in and around the conversation on Sunday, and the 29-year-old impressively finished T3 with -16. Having held the lead, Tony Finau could not see of the challenge of surprise winner Michael Thompson, who secured a long overdue PGA win, only his second since 2013. Finau’s struggles on day four of events continue as the 30-year-old looks ahead after a switch of caddies. We price him at 33/1* to secure a victory at TPC Southwind.
