The rescheduled four-day Guineas Festival meeting gets underway at Newmarket on Friday. We preview the talented colts running in this year’s 2000 Guineas race.
What is the 2000 Guineas race at Newmarket?
The 2000 Guineas Stakes is a Group 1 three-year-old race that takes place on the second day of Guineas Festival at Newmarket. Thoroughbred colts are eligible.
The flat race length is one mile long and usually takes place in April or May. Because of the enforced break, the 2020 Guineas Festival begins in June.
Why is the 2000 Guineas race so popular?
Simple. It is the first of the Classic five UK races in the calendar. Dating back to 1809, this race is one of the oldest ever thoroughbred races in the world.
The 2000 Guineas makes up the first of the Triple Crown races. The Triple Crown comprises three thoroughbred races in which jockeys and trainers aim to win all three. By winning all three races, a horse, its jockey, trainer and owner, join a prestigious list of Triple Crown winners.
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the last English Triple Crown winner, Nijinsky. In 1970, jockey Lester Piggott rode the Canadian horse to wins at Newmarket in the 2000 Guineas, the Derby at Epsom, and the St. Leger Stakes in Yorkshire.
The last horse to come closest to becoming a Triple Crown winner was Camelot. In 2012, the Irish-trained star secured wins in the 2000 and the Derby, but fell less than a length short against Encke in the St. Legers.
What is the prize money for this race?
The prize fund for this year’s race is £250,000, half of last year’s half a million prize purse.
What time is the 2000 Guineas race?
Race five of the eight-race Day 2, Newmarket have scheduled the popular race for a 3.35 start.
