Thoughts on Real Madrid vs Eibar
It’s the first game back for Real Madrid who are looking to catch up their rivals Barcelona in the race for the La Liga title. If they can overtake Barca in first position at the end of the season, Los Blancos will secure a record 34th La Liga title in their history. Zinedine Zidane also has the Champions League to think about in August if his side cannot catch the Catalonians. They are hosting minnows SD Eibar, but not at the Santiago Bernabeu.
They cannot use the iconic stadium for the rest of the season because of renovation work. Estadio Alfredo Di Stéfano is their 6,000 capacity training ground which Real Madrid Castilla play in. With Real playing a day after Barca, they will know if they are five points behind in second. I can only see a home win, however, this is the first game back so it will be interesting to see which Real Madrid side we see.
Zizou to use his squad depth?
The aim is very much within reach for Zizou and his side. Defeats either side of their impressive 2-0 defeat of Barcelona before the break did not help though. However, time away from those results gives the hosts a chance to continue their battle for the title with fresh legs. Real Madrid are only two points behind heading into the weekend and know that they have the better depth of squad compared to Barcelona. The impact of substitutes and squad rotation for the rest of the season could be vital for both sides.
The stats looking very promising for Los Blancos heading into this one as you would expect. With 25 points from 14 away league matches, the hosts have the best away record in the league. They are unbeaten at home and have conceded third least amount of goals of any team in La Liga with nine. However, they have scored 14 goals fewer than Barcelona, who have the edge on goal difference which could be the deciding factor at the end of the season. They have scored in seven of their last eight La Liga games and have only failed to score at home in 15% of games this season.
Eibar floating with relegation
The small city club with less than 30,000 residents are in the same position they finished in back in 2014/15. 16th place was their first season in La Liga after years competing in the Segunda Division. They were on an incline, finishing as high as 12th in 2017-18, but find themselves down near the foot of the table again. Manager Jose Luis Mendilibar has overseen the club in the last few seasons, and will hope to avoid defeat against Los Blancos to ease relegation fears.
The stats don’t look too strong for SD Eibar heading into this one. Los Armeros have won just one away game all season, and have lost four of their last five. However, they often keep clean sheets when they avoid defeats in La Liga. 62% of points they have picked up via wins and draws have seen Eibar shut out the opposition. The visitors have defeated the likes of Atletico Madrid and Sevilla this season. But getting on the scoresheet, particularly away from home, has been a struggle. They have failed to score in seven of their 13 away league games this season.
