Aston Villa vs Liverpool summary
With Dean Smith still at the helm of the Aston Villa dressing room, there were many worries for Villa fans at the start of the season. Although after a flawless opening two games, and introducing the Championship’s second highest goalscorer of the 19/20 season Ollie Watkins for almost £30m, along with bolstering the back line with Emiliano Martínez and Matty Cash for a combined total of around £30m, not to mention the recent signing of England International Ross Barkley on a season-long loan.
Liverpool have started where they left off last season, and following Villa they also have an unblemished start to the new season. After cutting it close against Leeds in their opening day seven-goal thriller, they made light-work of defeating two of the Premier League’s ‘big six’. With new added depth in Diogo Jota and Konstantinos Tsimikas for a combined total of over £50m and introducing Bayern Munich superstar Thiago Alcântara, Liverpool will hope to secure back-to-back Premier League titles for the first time in their history.
Aston Villa Team News and Form
With two clean sheets in their opening two fixtures, Dean Smith’s recent additions in their back line prove to be the right choice as Aston Villa will hope to better their lacklustre 17th place finish following their return to the Premier League.
After making 11 changes in their Carabao Cup defeat to Stoke City, Aston Villa boss Dean Smith should have plenty of choice with picking his starting 11 for the ‘Villains’. The only slight worry is with Kortney Hause, who came off during the defeat to Stoke.
Sunday’s game could also see the debut of Ross Barkley for Aston Villa. After joining Villa on a season-long loan he will be eager to get started and will hope to be playing regular first team football, with the Euros just around the corner.
Liverpool Team News and Form
With the new added depth in the Liverpool squad, manager Jurgen Klopp will have plenty of choice in picking his team for the trip to Villa Park. After a home debut goal against Arsenal from Diogo Jota, and a brace against Lincoln earlier in the season from Takumi Minamino, along with Salah, Firmino and Mané, Klopp is spoilt for choice in picking his front three.
A blow for Liverpool as new signing Thiago Alcântara will not be at Jurgen Klopp’s disposal because of being in isolation after testing positive with COVID-19. Injury will also rule Kostas Tsimikas out as he will not be back until after the international break, having picked up thigh tissue in Liverpool’s 7-2 victory over Lincoln last week.
Jordan Henderson remains a possibility for Liverpool after not playing since Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Chelsea earlier this season when he received a knock. The Liverpool captain will be eager to get playing again, although remains doubtful.
