Thoughts on Aston Villa vs Man Utd
After an impressive and valiant effort against the champions Liverpool, Aston Villa suffered another defeat once again. It was the latest game they failed to find the net and now is not the time to have goals drying up. Especially as they face another top side that are in hot form in Manchester United. Unbeaten since the restart, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men have just put five past fellow relegation-threatened Bournemouth with ease. The deadly front line and the creative spark in midfield has given United a strong hope they can return to competing in the Champions League next season.
One of Villa better performances, especially on the road, came against United in fact in the reverse fixture. Captain and vital player Jack Grealish, linked with a move to Man Utd, got on the scoreline as United had to settle for a 2-2 draw. However, the United team has transformed in quality thanks to returning players and this could be a much easier affair if Villa cannot match their courageous efforts at Anfield. The Red Devils have only lost to Villa once since the turn of the millennium and have won 31 of their last 39 meetings in all competitions.
Villa boss and fan Dean Smith facing the drop
The fixture list in the Premier League for Aston Villa presented a lot of tough challenges. Chelsea, Liverpool, Wolves, Man Utd and Arsenal all to play in their remaining games was not ideal. However, in the more even and winnable games at home to Sheffield United and away to Newcastle United, Villa picked up two draws meaning two points from six. Four points extra could be the difference between staying up and getting relegated if they are to not pick up any points against top half opposition.
They have improved defensively, an area they have struggled hugely this season, and they have yet to concede more than twice in a game since the restart. However, the stats heading into this one do not look promising for the Villains. They have the jointed third highest goals per game ratio with 2.97 in the Premier League. They have shipped 62 goals this season, more than any other team this season. Aston Villa have only score twice in their last seven PL games and have conceded first in nine of their last 12.
The perfect late season revival for Solskjaer
Regardless of where they finish, it is perhaps still a hugely underwhelming season for United. Pressure on Solskjaer and the Manchester United board, particularly during the early stages of the season, was more than valid. They were hovering in and around mid-table, dealing with the Paul Pogba saga, and lacked any other plan other than to counterattack and hope for the best. But the arrival of Bruno Fernandes and the return of a motivated Pogba alongside a rest for the first team during the break has done wonders.
Man Utd have looked like their former self, a side that teams now fear when they see they are playing them next. That is exactly how Aston Villa will feel after the Red Devils, despite conceding twice, cruised past Bournemouth. United are unbeaten in four away games in the Premier League after a 3-0 win at the AMEX against Brighton. They are looking to kill teams off earlier in games, as they have now scored at least two goals in the first half in their last three Premier League games. They have also scored in every second half in their four games since the restart. Fernandes and Mason Greenwood have three goals in their last two games.
