Thoughts on Aston Villa vs Wolves

A massive game at Villa Park for the hosts in particular as Aston Villa are winless in seven Premier League games. Wolves have returned to action with back-to-back wins and have put themselves within a shout of securing Champions League football. This meeting will be just their second in the Premier League since 2012, having both spent time in the Championship.

In the reverse fixture, Wolves secured a 2-1 victory at Molineux thanks to a late goal from in-form Raul Jimenez. However, Villa have not lost this rival derby clash at home since 2011 and desperately need all three points in their survival bid. This will be their fourth game already, the most of any Premier League side so far.

A must win derby clash for Villa

Two points from a possible nine sees Aston Villa still in the relegation zone on 27 points. However, the Villains are on level points with fellow strugglers Bournemouth and West Ham United, with Watford just a point ahead. A win against Wolves in this solo Premier League match on Saturday could see them climb to 16th. A draw would also see them climb out of the relegation zone to 17th, and be behind the Hornets on goal difference.

In terms of the stats heading into this one, it will please Villa that this clash is at home. They have a 1.20 PPG at home, compared to just 0.56 PPG away. You can expect goals in games involving the hosts, with 3.06 goals scored or conceded per game. That is the second highest in the entire league behind Manchester City. Clean sheets have been a problem area for the leaky Villa defence, who have shipped the most goals in the league with 59. Both teams have scored in 20 of their 31 games.

Wolves on the hunt for Champions League

It has been an excellent return to action for a Wolves side who despite their form, may have welcomed the break. The squad has played a vast amount of games this season with very little rotation in the side. The Europa League games, FA Cup games, and the EFL Cup games on top of the gruelling Premier League fixtures has been a big ask of the side, but they have done very well.

Wolves currently sit in sixth and will welcome helping to send rivals Villa down to the Championship if they can secure a win. With just six defeats this season, Wolves have the second fewest losses behind the recently announced champions Liverpool. With just one defeat in their last 10 in all competitions, Nuno Espirito Santo’s side are difficult to beat, and are strong away from home. They have a 1.60 away PPG, suffering only three league defeats on the road. All three of their goals have come in the second half, a feature of their season. They have failed to score in only 16% of games this season.
