Brighton vs Chelsea Summary
The long wait is finally over and the commencement of a new Premier League season has arrived. Frank Lampard’s first season in charge as the Chelsea manager saw the Blues finish 4th in the Premier League table, securing all important Champions League football.
Furthermore, following a very busy summer transfer window with over £200m spent so far the pressure is on for Lampard’s side to deliver silverware and mount a real title challenge. Meanwhile following a strong run of form to finish the 2019-20 season Brighton clinched survival coming in at 15th in the Premier League table.
Brighton Team News and Form
After surviving their third Premier League season in a row, The Seagulls will look to make it a fourth this year. After finishing 15th in the table for the second time in their three-year stay in the Premier League, it really is survival or bust for Graham Potter’s men.
With the departures of several key players for Brighton in the shape of Aaron Mooy, Shane Duffy and Glenn Murray, Graham Potter will hope that the £20m Frenchman Neal Maupay will carry on his inspired form where he left of at the tail end of the 2019-20 season. Scoring in two of his last three games and his notorious performance in Brightons 2-1 win over Arsenal to kickoff the Premier League restart.
Brighton have been boosted with the additions of ex-Liverpool creative midfielder Adam Lallana signing on a free, two new central defenders in Jan Paul Van Hecke and Joel Veltman, as well as the contract extension of Club captain Lewis Dunk, keeping the 28-year-old at the club until 2025.
Brighton produced no wins in their pair of preseason games. However, they managed a 1-1 draw against opening match day competitors Chelsea, and a 0-0 draw with Premier League returnees West Brom.
Chelsea Team News and Form
Following a first successful season under new manager Frank Lampard, the club and fans finally seem united under the leadership of the Chelsea legend. With ambitions of once again not only conquering England but Europe, the Chelsea hierarchy have spent big showing they are fully backing the boss.
With over £200m being spent so far on transfers, this Chelsea side look to be a genuine force for this upcoming season. The welcomed additions of instinctive goal scorer Timo Werner, as well as the inventive and inspiring flare and ability that record signing Kai Havertz brings to the table. The ceiling is limitless for this team.
From a defensive standpoint, for many this being the primary concern for Chelsea, The experience and maturity of Thiago Silva has been brought in on a free transfer from Paris Saint Germain. Then Followed another big money signing, more familiar to Premier League fans in Ben Chilwell from Leicester.
The left back brings in a fresh pace and consistency to the Chelsea back line that both Alonso and Emerson failed to do last season. Chelseas only pre season fixture was the 1-1 draw against Mondays competitors Brighton.

Brighton Top Goalscorers
Neal Maupay (10 Premier league goals) The 24-year-old bagged 10 top flight goals in his first season in the Premier league. With Veteran Glenn Murray leaving the club, Maupay is Brightons only real goalscorer for this upcoming season and the success of the club will lay heavily in the quality of his performances.
Leandro Trossard (5 Premier league goals) The left sided Belgian winger produced 5 goals and 3 assists in last season’s campaign. However, Graham Potter will hope for more this season from the Belgian.
During his time with Genk, Trossard could effect the game from all over the field, dropping deep to get others involved, or beating his opponent off the ball to create space for others. If Trossard can improve on his final ball and finishing, he could have a breakout campaign.
Chelsea Top Goalscorers
Timo Werner (28 Bundesliga goals) Coming off the back of an incredible season with RB Leipzig, Werner secured his Premier League move. With Chelseas number nine spot being rotated between Tammy Abraham and Frenchman Olivier Giroud for most of the season, Werner is the true World class goal scorer that Chelsea missed last year.
Tammy Abraham (15 Premier league goals) With the signing of Timo Werner, it makes for a tricky situation when looking at Abraham. Despite the young English talent scoring 15 Premier League goals last season, towards the back end of the campaign he was often overlooked by Frank Lampard with Olivier Giroud the preferred option.
Although Werner can play on the Left, allowing for Abraham to take the number 9 role, it is hard to see it happening with Mount, Ziyech, Havertz, Barkley and Hudson-Odoi already poised as creative options. I believe a regular starting spot might be hard for Tammy to keep hold of this season.
- Chilwell, Silva, Ziyech and Gilmour are all out injured for Chelsea, meanwhile Kovacic is suspended from the FA cup final
- Florin Andone is the only player out injured for Brighton
- Brighton were 3-0 victors on the opening day of last season, meanwhile Chelsea lost 4-0 to Manchester United.
In the previous six Premier league meetings between the clubs, Chelsea have won 5 while 1 has ended in a stalemate. Chelsea have scored a combined 12 goals while Brighton just 2.
