Thoughts on Man Utd vs Sheffield Utd
Before the return of the Premier League action last week, Sheffield United could have leapfrogged United into fifth place in the league. However, just one point from their opening two games has halted their push for an unbelievable finish in the Champions League positions. Man Utd secured a 1-1 draw against a resolute Spurs side. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men will feel they should have secured all three points after camping in the Spurs half late on after impressive substitutes appearances from Paul Pogba and Mason Greenwood.
It is still unknown whether Manchester City will play in the Champions League next season, meaning a fifth place finish in the league could be enough to secure Champions League football. However, with Chelsea winning and Wolves making an impressive start to Project Restart, these two sides need wins to keep their hopes of Champions League football alive.
Pogba and Fernandes link-up to shine again?
The focus of the giddy Martin Tyler and Gary Neville in commentary was on the long-awaited return of Paul Pogba last time out. The Frenchman put in a convincing performance and helped to win a penalty after an excellent piece of skill on the Spurs byline. His new teammate in the middle of the park, Bruno Fernandes, converted that penalty to start their potential partnership on the pitch.
United are looking strong heading into this one according to the stats. The hosts have lost just twice in the Premier League at Old Trafford and have extended their unbeaten run to 12 games in all competitions. However, their latest result means United have drawn 10 games this season. 31% of goals scored and conceded at Old Trafford have come between 31-45 period in the league.
Blades with rare defensive collapse
Chris Wilder has built his success this season on efficiently with low-scoring games in which they keep out the opposition. From their 30 league games this season, they have kept an impressive 11 clean sheets. The defensive unit is well-organised and before their last game, had only conceded six league goals in 2020. A shock 3-0 defeat to Newcastle United and a red card for John Egan saw The Blades’s chances of Champions League football take a tremendous hit.
That is a sentence nobody would expect to make at the start of the season. Wilder will want to see a reaction from his side, and his side know how to get a result away from home. Sheffield United have took points in 80% of their away games this season. Only Liverpool have lost fewer games away from home this season.
