Manchester United vs Liverpool
Who? Manchester United vs Liverpool in Premier League Matchweek 9 Super Sunday (Live on Sky Sports)
Where? Old Trafford, Manchester
When? 16:30 GMT, Sunday 20th October 2019
The build up to this one has started early despite the contrasting positions the two clubs, as Manchester United host Liverpool in a fierce derby clash on Sunday.
United’s struggles are not going away soon, with the club continuing to break the wrong records this season. Having made their worst ever start to a Premier League season, this game is a crucial time in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s reign. A win, regardless of the performance, could be a huge lift for everyone at the club and not just paper over cracks. A humiliating defeat, however, will only pile more misery and frustration in what could be a long season for United fans.
Some might call it luck, others may say it is the sign of champions. No doubt it has been a much tougher couple of fixtures for Liverpool who scraped past Sheffield United with a goalkeeping error and a late penalty against Leicester. These moments have meant they still have a perfect record, but how long can they keep this going? The next run of fixtures will be truly testing for the Reds, with United, Tottenham, Aston Villa and then the huge clash against Manchester City in November to come.
Manchester United (4/1* to Win): As confirmed earlier in the week, injuries have ruled out David de Gea and Paul Pogba for this huge clash. Also doubtful players include Aaron Wan Bissaka, Luke Shaw, Victor Lindelof, Jesse Lingard and Phil Jones.
Liverpool (4/6* to Win): Jurgen Klopp may be back with defender Joel Matip whilst first choice Alisson Becker is very close to a full return. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain may be available for selection, with Xherdan Shaqiri the only definite absentee.
The French forward has recovered from a thigh injury and will make his return to the side. This will be against opponents he scored his debut goal for Manchester United against in a memorable 3-1 victory back in 2015. Despite being out for six-weeks, Martial is still the third top goalscorer at the club this season and his importance to the side has truly reflected lately. He can take pressure off the shoulders of Marcus Rashford and cause trouble for the Liverpool back line.
The Senegalese forward has continued to star for his Liverpool side, showing scintillating form for the Reds. He already has eight goals in 11 games in all competitions coming off winning the Golden Boot last season and lifting the Champions League. His ability to turn defenders and create spaces in the opposition box set him apart as an elite star in Europe. He could be key in unlocking the cautious Manchester United defence, who will probably sit in deep and spring counter attacks.
In 230 meetings since 1894, Manchester United have the edge with 88 wins and 66 draws, with Liverpool recording 76 wins.
Interestingly, five of the last season meetings between the clubs have finished in draws.
There have been three goals or fewer in 18 of the last 20 meetings between the sides in all competitions.
The last time Liverpool won at Old Trafford was back in 2014, a convincing 3-0 away victory.
