Thoughts on AC Milan vs Roma
The Rossoneri take on 5th place AS Roma, who are looking set for another season in the Europa League unless they win this year’s competition. For Milan, they need to put a run of games together in these last 11 games if they want European football again. The sleeping giant of a club find themselves off the pace once again this season sitting eighth and having another change in management.
AC Milan are the only side in the top 10 to have a negative goal difference and finding the net themselves has been tough this season. Roma, however, are performing better. Led by former Manchester City duo Edin Dzeko and Aleksandar Kolarov, the Giallorossi are on a strong run of games.
Having overcome Sampdoria earlier in the week, the visitors extended their unbeaten run to five games. They had failed to win their previous five in all competitions. These two sides historically have close games. In the last 21 meetings in the league, Milan have won six times, Roma have won eight times, and there have been seven draws.
Will we see AC Milan forwards start to shine?
The likes of Rafael Leao and Lucas Paqueta signed for big money and have not delivered yet. Glimpses and moments here and there, the AC Milan front line has been an issue area for some time. The return of Zlatan Ibrahimovic showed a sign of desperation, with the 38-year-old not ending his playing career in the way his character and ego would envisage. However, his three goals is enough to put the Swedish striker fourth in the top scorers, which says a lot about issues with scoring goals.
It was a promising start for AC Milan and their comeback from the enforced break. They put four past Lecce with goals from top scorer Ante Rebic, another big money signing, as well as Leao. That is the Portuguese striker’s third goal since joining from Lille last summer. Despite the lack of high volume goalscorers, Milan have only failed to score in six Serie A games this season. They have struggled at home however, with just four home wins in Serie A this season. A big 66% of goals scored or conceded come in the second half of AC Milan games, with 24% of goals coming between the 76th and 90th minutes of games.
Roma and their ex-Premier League stars to secure another win?
When you go through the likes of the Inter Milan and Roma sides, the squads are full of former Premier League players. The moves from England to Italy has benefitted many in their careers, including the likes of Edin Dzeko and Aleksandar Kolarov, who are the club’s top goalscorers this season. Manchester United defender Chris Smalling is another name who has reinvented himself with the move to Rome, whilst Pedro will be the latest to join from the Premier League next season.
The trend of English players playing abroad is really picking up speed and could be a regular occurrence soon. Smalling has been a part of a back line that rarely keeps a clean sheet with just six shutouts in Serie A this season. Going forward however, Roma have performed much better, only failing to score in five games this season. They have scored in nine out of their last 10 away games in all competitions. The visitors have scored two or more goals in the second half 33% of the time, including in their last three Serie A games. They average 63% Over 1.5 goals in the second half.
