Thoughts on Atalanta vs Lazio
An unstoppable force meets an immovable object. There aren’t many fixtures the Italian League could conjure that would be a better advertisement for Serie A than this one: Atalanta vs Lazio. No contest could act as a better metaphor for the surging rise in quality some challenging teams have experienced in recent years, specifically synonymous with these two clubs.
It couldn’t be a more difficult return to action for The Eagles as they resume their stunning season midweek, whilst for their opponents: it was business as usual as Atalanta on Sunday re-opened their Serie A campaign with a customary thrashing, beating Sassuolo 4-1, a huge victory that could give them the edge as they head into Wednesday’s war.
In the twelve meetings between the two clubs since 2015, honours have been ‘even-Stevens’ with both clubs recording four victories each, drawing four times too. The two have been at logger-heads for sometime now, and we could not be more beautifully poised.
Atalanta taking no prisoners
Serie A this season has felt the full wrath of Gasperini’s men: not only are the Nerazzurri the division’s top scorers with 74, a humongous fourteen goals ahead of 2nd best Lazio, but their average number of total goals per match this season is the highest in the division, an astronomical 4.19. In fact, the Orobici have recorded 5-0 scorelines twice in the league, AC Milan and Parma the poor victims, and have scored seven goals in a game on three occasions in Serie A.
They score an impressive 2.85 goals a game and boast a monstrous 2.55 xG (expected goals) whilst taking an average of 19.62 shots a match; few teams can puff out their chests with the same level of conviction Atalanta do, who will be relentless this Wednesday.
Lazio lurking close behind the Old Lady
As outstanding as Atalanta are going forward, Lazio may be the best bet to limit them: Simone Inzaghi’s men concede 0.88 goals a game, boasting the best defensive record in the league (23 goals against), impressive considering they’ve conceded one fewer than the reigning champions Juventus and two fewer than Inter Milan under the notoriously solid and compact Antonio Conte.
But that’s not to say they fire blanks going forward, The Eagles have scored the second most amount of goals in the division with 60, not to mention that they’re spearheaded by Ciro Immobile, the league’s top goal scorer with 27. Lazio will feel as best prepared than anyone to take the game to Atalanta and relinquish Juve’s stranglehold on Serie A.
