Astro Legends – Slot Review

If you’ve never played Microgaming’s cosmic slot Astro Legends, you’re missing out on a truly unique and immersive gaming experience.

Combining intergalactic adventure with the 80s culture and head-banging, retro rock music, this slot will see you join forces with the enigmatic Lyra as she looks to save the earth from her nemesis Erion.

Whilst saving the earth is a noble cause, we reckon it would definitely be improved if you could make some money along the way! So, here’s our breakdown of the slot and everything that it offers!

Layout and Design – Breaking the Visual Mould

Let’s start with the basics; as this slot boasts a completely unique aesthetic and a reel grid formation, that’s completely out of this world!

In fact, the traditional grid setup has been completely eschewed and replaced with 22 squares that appear in a challenging formation of 1-2-3-3-4-3-3-2-1.

This mind-bending layout includes 20 base game pay lines, which take the form of ‘clusters’ that must include five or matching symbols. It will not include icons that touch the corners in winning combinations, adding an extra layer of complexity to this beguiling slot.

In a neat twist, Lyra stands to the left of the reel formation holding her trusty electric guitar. This slot also boasts a deceptively impressive return-to-player (RTP) rate of 96.63%.

Despite the complex visual design of the slot, Astro Legends is easy to play.

To start, you need to toggle your choice of the coin size, within an available range of 0.01 and 10. You can also stake a maximum of one coin per line. This creates the limited but defined betting range that’s synonymous with low-variance slots.

You can also deploy the ‘Autoplay’ feature at any point in the game. This will keep your stake at the previous level and can increase the pace of gameplay rapidly.

As you’d imagine for an innovative slot of this type, Astro Legends also includes some vivid and futuristic symbols. These include modern iterations of the Q, K and A playing cards. These sit at the lower end of the paytable and trigger modest payouts.

As for the slot’s special symbols, these include the pink and purple ‘Orb’ wild. When you reveal one of these icons in a winning combination, it will apply a randomly selected multiplier from 2x to 5x your stake.

This multiplier wild can only appear on the three grid squares that have a red outline. Landing two or more in a single cluster will see the value of these multipliers combined to create a more sizeable win.

As with most wilds, this symbol can also replace all others to forge new and exciting winning combinations during the base game.

Payouts and Features – Pursuing Big But Infrequent Wins

This slot also features several interesting bonuses, including the Sonic Re-Spin feature.

This activates immediately after it has formed a winning cluster, at which point all other symbols are held in place as the wheels spin again. If the current cluster is added to (or they form a new one), the process will repeat, creating the potential for several lucrative winning combinations within a relatively short time.

Next up is the Lyra Spirit Bonus, and to trigger this you must collect 100 points of Star Dust. They generate these points at random throughout the game when a Star Burst Bubble appears on the grid and delivers any amount between two and 10 to your tally as it builds above Lyra’s head.

As the bonus starts, you must navigate Lyra’s Wolf spirit throughout the game, and you’ll start with three lives and on the first of seven bonus levels. On each of these levels, you’ll choose one of three paths to take Lyra’s Wolf Spirit on, whilst hoping to avoid bumping into the dreaded Erion (as each encounter will claim one of your lives).

Your chances of meeting Erion increase as you navigate through bonus levels four to seven, but every life you have left at the end of the bonus will increase your bet with a whopping 20x multiplier.

These bonuses add a nice touch to the gameplay, whilst the combination of a competitive RTP rate and the striking 80s theme make this slot ideal for casual or inexperienced players!
